Mexico auctions pricey gems, including a $155,000 Piaget diamond watch, seized from drug traffickers - Daily Mail

Posted: 22 Jul 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Mexico is auctioning pricey gems, including a $155,000 men's diamond watch, that once belonged to the country's most dangerous cartel members.

The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit introduced 148 lots complete with 2,000 items that include diamond-encrusted earrings, watches, bracelets, chains  and other luxurious accessories that were seized during raids in years past.

The auction, which opened July 15 and runs until July 25, is being held at Los Pinos, the former presidential palace in Mexico City that has been turned into a museum and cultural venue ever since leftist president Andrés Manuel López Obrador entered office in 2018.

The 18 karat, white gold timepiece features 49 baguette cut diamonds on the dial and bezel and another 18 on the side of the bezel. It also has an additional 160 baguette cut diamonds on the pulse.

In June, the Mexican government held an auction on to sell off properties seized from notorious cartel leaders and drug traffickers, and raised $2.6 million.

Another mansion in the Pacific coast state of Colima was listed at $90,000 and sold for $137,000.

Mexico is also in the midst of seeing how it can recoup all of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán's fortune that has been valued at $14 billion by the United States government.

Last Thursday, López Obrador argued that the funds should be returned to El Chapo's home country of Mexico.

He also demanded that the US return the assets they had already seized from the gang leader.

Danton - MoMA
May 26, 2019 - New York

Andrzej Wajda and Jean-Claude Carrière's daring, and dashing, history of the Reign of Terror in revolutionary France pits Robespierre, the ruthless Jacobin, and Danton, the self-appointed populist, in an ideological clash between two forms of despotism: tyranny of the one, and of the many. The film's contemporary relevance in 1983 did not go unnoticed, provoking cries of heresy among the embattled socialist left in France, and cries of heroic resistance within Poland's Solidarity movement during martial law.

SMILE! – Music by Marvin Hamlisch & Lyrics by Howard Ashman - Connelly Theater
Through May 26, 2019 - New York

Teen performers 13-18 working in theater or pursuing careers in musical theater. They come from Broadway, Hollywood, West End, LaGuardia, Performing Arts High School...(Ben Platt was a member of KT before "Dear Evan Hansen"). SMILE! which features music by Marvin Hamlisch and book and lyrics by Howard Ashman, is "a satirical portrait that follows the intrigue and exploits onstage and behind-the-scenes as Santa Rosa, California plays host to the Young American Miss Pageant." Songs from the Hamlisch-Ashman score include "Disneyland," "Smile," "In Our Hands," "Very Best Week of Your Lives" and "Dear Mom." Smile is rarely performed. It opened Nov. 24, 1986, at Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. It played 48 performances. Marvin Hamlisch was so devastated, the show was never performed again until after his passing. From the NYTimes review in 1986: The endearing passion to be found in ''Smile,'' has little to do with beauty pageants, nubile teen-age girls, corrupted American values or any other subject that the show keeps claiming to be about. What clearly drives Howard Ashman, the author of the book and lyrics, and Marvin Hamlisch, the composer, is their deep affection ... (read more)

Climate Change Reading Group - The New York Public Library, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building
May 28, 2019 - New York

Want to become more informed and engaged on issues of climate change? The New York Public Library, together with Melville House, is hosting a monthly series for the New York City community to read the Climate Report, published in 2018 by the U.S. Global Change Research Program, and discuss its findings and implications. This month, we turn to city infrastructure, transportation, and their environmental consequences. We will be joined by representatives from New York Communities for Change, whose work emphasizes renewable energy and environmental justice by critically examining New York's energy consumption and fostering legislative change. After participating in a lively discussion, attendees can view selections from the records of the NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign, representing four decades of advocacy for the rights and interests of New York City's public transit riders. By situating the Library's archival collections within the current environmental moment, we can consider how present-day activism is tied to a rich historical context.

Late Night Packet Jam - UCBT Hell's Kitchen
May 29, 2019 - New York

Late Night Packet Jam is the showcase for new & weird bits from New York's top late night writers, hosted by UCB's Night Late team. These submitted monologue jokes, desk bits, games, walk-on characters, and weirdo experimental ideas all get their moment in front of late night's best audience. If it's going in a late night packet tomorrow (or eventually), it'll be at Late Night Packet Jam. Guidelines If interested in submitting, send a script of your bit (or monologue jokes) to ucbpacketjam@gmail.com by midnight one week before showtime. Your bit must be written (no improv), under five minutes, and have zero (or ultra-simple!) tech queues. Except for monologue jokes, you're responsible for performing your bit. (If you'd like to read your monologue jokes yourself, let us know in the email) If you miss the deadline, at the show you can drop your idea in the Last Chance Bucket, where one randomly-chosen bit is selected and performed with very little preparation! LNPJ submissions are open to all and you may submit more than one bit.

Valerie Steele and Jeffrey Gibson in Conversation - New Museum
May 30, 2019 - New York

This conversation between legendary fashion historian Valerie Steele, Director and Chief Curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and artist Jeffrey Gibson will explore relationships between couture and indigenous fashion design. This program is presented on the occasion of "Jeffrey Gibson: The Anthropophagic Effect." Multimedia artist Jeffrey Gibson (b. 1972, Colorado Springs, CO) is the artist-in-residence for the Department of Education and Public Engagement's Winter/Spring R&D Season: INHERITANCE. Gibson's exhibition will explore the material histories and futures of several Indigenous handcraft techniques and aesthetics, including Southeastern river cane basket weaving, Algonquian birch bark biting, and porcupine quillwork, as practiced by many tribes across this land long before European settlers arrived. The title "The Anthropophagic Effect" alludes to Oswald de Andrade's legendary 1928 Anthropophagic Manifesto, which argued that indigenous communities could "devour" colonizers' culture as a way of rejecting domination and radically transforming Western culture to their own ends. Gibson notes that Indigenous crafts and designs have "historically been us... (read more)

She believed in exposing us to all parts of our imagination, building paths towards new unknowns. Here at the 14the Street Y Theater, we also believe that all children should experience that magic, sit excitedly for unknowns, and meet new characters for their imagination to take into new worlds. Mitch Winehouse + Alexis Fishman in a double bill to support the Amy Wineouse Foundation - City Winery
Through May 30, 2019 - New York

About: Musical Director: James Dobinson Mitch Winehouse In 2011, Mitch Winehouse released his debut album, 'Rush Of Love' and it told a fascinating story. Mitch and Amy poured through the records they loved - jazz, big band and swing classics that laid bare the roots of the Winehouse musical DNA, the connection between the music that Mitch's East End upbringing drummed into him, which he handed onto his own children. The press was surprised, "The temptation to dismiss it as a vanity project falls away in the face of what is actually an accomplished piece of work," wrote the Daily Telegraph. Mitch released his second record, 'But Beautiful' on his daughter's Lioness label, three years after her tragic death, this time in aid of the Amy Winehouse Foundation. Produced by James McMillan written by Grant Black with his father, the great lyricist Don Black, contributing a new song, 'Never Too Far From A Song' a big band tribute to the love of music that sits perfectly alongside the classics like 'Learning The Blues', 'But Beautiful' and the bossa nova of 'Meditation'. Mitch has performed all over the world since 'Rush Of Love' - everywhere from the legendary ... (read more)

Danny Barker: A New Orleans Life in Jazz - Jazz at Lincoln Center
May 31, 2019 - New York

He made us believe in the music," says Wynton Marsalis. Jazz raconteur Danny Barker was born in New Orleans in 1909, but he spent most of his career here in New York, playing with Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, and countless others. When he finally returned home as a local legend, he gave the world a gift that you will see on stage tonight. Barker had made it his mission to remind New Orleanians that jazz was their sacred birthright, and he founded a youth group that turned reluctant children into the jazz leaders we know today. An elite group of those musicians now reunites in The Appel Room for a soulful tribute to their mentor. Music director Dr. Michael White is a virtuoso on clarinet—an essential voice in New Orleans jazz. He'll be leading a band featuring master trombonist Lucien Barbarin, trumpet legend Gregg Stafford, drummer Shannon Powell (AKA the "King of Treme"), original Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra drummer Herlin Riley, and trumpeter Leroy Jones, who Wynton says "was the best of all of us." Guitarist and banjoist Don Vappie will play the role of "Mr. Barker," as the musicians still call him. The show also features pianist... (read more)

It Was War / C'était la guerre - MoMA

C'etait la guerre draws upon two novelistic memoirs, Commander Azzedine's We Were Called Fellaghas (1974) and Jean-Claude Carrière's Peace of the Brave (1989), in confronting the Algerian War of Independence. "Burlesque, unreal, or bloody, the images that I kept of that time in Algeria are the strongest of my life," Jean-Claude Carrière would recall of his service in the French Air Force during the Algerian War. "When I proposed to Commander Azzedine, a mythical figure in the Algerian war of independence, to make a joint film about what our war was, he literally jumped for joy. Soon Ahmed Rachedi and Amazit Boukhalfa joined us, and on our side, Maurice Failevic, himself a former Algerian.

Jacob Varmus left his hometown, San Francisco, in 1991 to go to the University of Iowa. Like many before him, he had high hopes of coming of age as a poet while cruising the vast American heartland. In his first year he was admitted to the undergraduate writers' workshop where he studied with Jorie Graham. As he produced poems unremittingly and charted the labyrinthine maze of academic life as an English major, he also played trumpet devotedly, getting a good classical foundation with David Greenhoe. Danny Barker: A New Orleans Life in Jazz - Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Jazz at Lincoln Center
May 31, 2019 - New York

"He made us believe in the music," says Wynton Marsalis. He'll be leading a band featuring vocalist Catherine Russell, master trombonist Lucien Barbarin, trumpet legend Gregg Stafford, drummer Shannon Powell (AKA the "King of Treme"), original Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra drummer Herlin Riley, and trumpeter Leroy Jones, who Wynton says "was the best of all of us." Guitarist and banjoist Don Vappie will play the role of "Mr. Barker," as the musicians still call him. The s... (read more)

Hiroshi Wada: The First New York Solo Exhibition - Agora Gallery
Through May 31, 2019 - NYC

Japanese artist Hiroshi Wada is a calligraphy painter. Wada studied the ancient tradition of "shodo"—brush and ink drawing on rice paper— with a great master of this art form. While his art retains the spontaneity and playfulness of a child's drawing, in fact it takes years of apprenticeship to achieve their effortless look. Wada's aim, however, is not the traditional "sho." The artist believes in the importance of modernizing this conventional practice. He aspires to create calligraphy that is modern, even avant-garde, yet still rooted in tradition. When he writes characters, he forgets what he has learned and starts with a "clean slate", drawing like a child. For Wada, calligraphy is a way to bring joy and playfulness to others. Wada believes that while life's hurdles may range from personal failures to cataclysmic disasters, art has the capacity to empower, heal, and create peace. Wada's background as a track-and-field athlete reflects in the explosive energy and near-physical intensity to his gestural compositions. Hiroshi Wada: The First New York Solo Exhibition opens at May 11, 2019 and will be on display until May 31, 2019, with an opening reception on Thursday, May 1... (read more)

These artists find joy and peace in their subject matter, reflecting on the simplicity of nature without understating its significance. Ranging from complete abstraction to realism, the exhibition explores a range of image-making techniques and styles. Imbued with subtle intricacies and blazing expression, these artists depict nature with intelligent design. At once organic and precise, the work forces us to reexamine our relationship with the natural world and our definition of beauty. Kenny Garrett - Blue Note
Through June 02, 2019 - New York

Over the course of a stellar career that has spanned more than 30 years, saxophonist Kenny Garrett has become the preeminent alto saxophonist of his generation. From his first gig with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (led by Mercer Ellington) through his time spent with musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis, Garrett has always brought a vigorous yet melodic, and truly distinctive, alto saxophone sound to each musical situation. As a bandleader for the last two decades, he has also continually grown as a composer. With his latest recording (and second for Mack Avenue Records), Seeds From The Underground, Garrett has given notice that these qualities have not only become more impressive, but have provided him with the platform to expand his horizons and communicate his musical vision clearly. Seeds From The Underground is a powerful return to the straight-ahead, acoustic and propulsive quartet format that showcases Garrett's extraordinary abilities. For Garrett, Seeds From The Underground is a special recording. It once again consists of all original compositions, and is truly an homage to those who have inspired and influenced... (read more)

Zen A.M. - Theater for the New City
Through June 16, 2019 - NY

Theater for the New City presents "Zen A.M." by Natalie Menna. Comedy of New Age manners and mores is set among the "worried creatives" of post-9/11 New York. Since classical times, artists have always had to reconcile the demands of their patrons with their own artistic integrity. In the 21st century, the patrons' demands can come from both the left and right. "Zen A.M." illustrates the artists' conundrum, nesting it in present-day issues of class identification, compassion, cultural identity and creative resistance. Andrew Block directs. The play is a story of laughable characters straining to act rationally when faced with difficult decisions of artistic integrity.  Bruno, a 9/11 survivor, has abandoned his lucrative Wall Street career to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a painter. However, money is running out and his jealous, excitable yet pragmatic girlfriend--a fact-checker for a right wing media outlet--is set on getting married.   Bruno's guru/artistic collaborator is a New Age life coach named Chang. Bruno's best friend is a podiatrist named Hal, who is married to Rachael, a nouveaux riche woman who is part time Feng Shui consultant, jewelry designer and board ... Cyrilla Mozenter: See Why - Lesley Heller Gallery
Through June 30, 2019 - New York

Lesley Heller Gallery is pleased to present, See Why, an exhibition of new work by Cyrilla Mozenter. A follow-up to her previous exhibition with the gallery—the failed utopian (2015)—See Why continues Mozenter's focus on wool felt sculptures, large scale wall-hanging felt works, and delicate framed works on paper. The artworks further explore Mozenter's abstract narratives of text and sound—animated through personal pictographic imagery—and the deconstruction of letters as both images and sounds. Mozenter's practice is influenced by the writings of Gertrude Stein. Explorations of the phonetic sounds of letters have also been a reoccurring element in Mozenter's work, doubling at times as the works' titles. The letters and titles are playful and absurd; and defy singular interpretations.

Lesley Heller Gallery is pleased to present the first New York solo show of JF Lynch in our Project Space. Lynch is an artist known for his monochromatic works that feature abstracted letters and words set within a dark expanse. Working predominantly with charcoal on paper or canvas, Lynch's work bridges painting, drawing, and writing.

Exhibition opening: Woman Between Inhaling and Exhaling - Bohemian National Hall
Through July 28, 2019 - New York

[2nd Floor] An opening for the exhibition "Woman Between Inhaling and Exhaling" featuring photographs by Czech documentary photographer Dana Kyndrova who examines the many facets of women's lives. The presented photographs - shot primarily in the former Czechoslovakia and later in the Czech Republic, but also in some Western countries - show the precious moments of daily life, child birth, the tensions of school exams, falling in love. The project called "Woman Between Inhaling and Exhaling" includes photographs from the 1970s - 1990s, and its aim is to capture the life of a woman in its full variety, from birth to death. The project is divided into seven parts – adolescence, maternity and family, fun, work, eroticism, faith, and old age. Apart from the objective chronology of life's pilgrimage of a human being, or more precisely, of a woman, the photographs perceive the principal life values, which accompany and influence us during our entire existence. The theme is more or less general; thus the question is not to portray a particular environment or a characteristics of a certain country. One could say the woman portrayed is a „European" woman. A substantial part of the photograp... (read more)

An opening reception will be held on May 8, from 6-8 p.m. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue including essays by Gloria Orenstein, Professor Emerita, Comparative Literature and Gender Studies, University of Southern California, and Patryk Tomaszewski, an art historian at The Graduate Center, CUNY. Among Others: Photography and the Group - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through August 18, 2019 - Manhattan

Composed chiefly of works in the Morgan's collection, this exhibition explores how photographers have represented the bonds uniting people, whether in group portraits or in serial imagery. In arranged sittings, form is content: when commissioned to photograph the royals of Germany and England at a wedding in 1894, James Russell and Son's Studio instinctively centered its composition around the family's matriarch, Queen Victoria. Camera artists sometimes insert themselves into the action, as Susan Meiselas did when mingling with carnival strippers, first to portray them behind the scenes and then to photograph those in the audience from a performer's perspective. Action can also be a pose: in 1970, when asked to create a positive poster image for the Gay Liberation Front, Peter Hujar asked the group's members to run toward him on the street, enacting their slogan, "Come Out!!" Ingenuity may be called for when one's subjects are all too well-known: a press photographer, Jean-Pierre Ducatez, appealed to the primal desires of Beatles fans by zeroing in on the lips of each band member, creating a captivating game of who's-who. Bringing together works from the 1860s to the present, Among... (read more)

Hogarth: Cruelty and Humor - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 22, 2019 - Manhattan

The satirical scenes of the celebrated English artist William Hogarth (1697–1764) are iconic representations of eighteenth-century urban life at a time of great socio-economic disparity. An academic outsider and an activist, Hogarth was driven to innovate, creating new genres and modes of expression in his painting, printmaking, and drawing in his effort to elevate the status of British art. This exhibition will investigate the ways the artist used humor, satire, and political commentary to engage a broad audience and agitate for legislation and political goals. The exhibition features the Morgan's exceptional cache of six sheets preparatory for two of Hogarth's most revered print series, both issued in February 1751: Beer Street and Gin Lane and The Four Stages of Cruelty. The story of Hogarth's images reveal an artist who addressed the ills and injustices of life in a modern metropolis, exploring the connections between violence, crime, alcohol abuse, and cruelty to animals in ways that would amuse, occasionally shock, and edify his audience.

E. v. Day: Breaking the Glass Ceiling - Children's Museum of the Arts
Through October 27, 2019 - New York

Known for her gravity-defying suspension sculptures that explore themes of science fiction, space, gender, and humor, E. V. Day illuminates contradictions in gender roles and stretches the confines of social stereotypes. In her new site-specific installation in the central Cynthia C. Wainwright Gallery, E. V. Day will use turnbuckles, monofilament, and angle iron to build multiple suspended trajectories in the ceiling, using the columns and walls as mounting points. Day will employ chains, brass rods, elastic cords, and hardware to build tension, highlight resistance, and imply velocity. The ceiling installation will be complemented by shattered glass images displayed around the perimeter of the gallery referencing cosmic aspirations — the strong desire to achieve something that might feel just outside of one's reach.

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - The Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs brings together drawings, paintings, and photography by the American Modernist artist, while examining the confluence of two seemingly disparate series completed later in his life, Torn Signs and Semana Santa. Though their subject matter is drastically different—one is inspired by tattered advertisements on the streets of New York, while the other depicts observers of Holy Week in Seville, Spain—Crawford connects them through his extraordinary visual memory, working method, and sense of spatial organization. The convergence of these two incredible series culminates in Torn Signs, 1974-76, the powerful, large-scale painting that sits at the thematic center of the exhibition.

Now on display at the New-York Historical Society is a newly acquired and conserved Picasso in the exhibition Picasso's "Le Tricorne." It is the first work by Picasso, and one with great wall power and a New York history, to enter New-York Historical's collection. Pablo Picasso painted the stage curtain for the two-act ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (El sombrero de tres picos or Le tricorne). The ballet and curtain were commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev for his avant-garde, Paris-based Ballets Russes, the most influential ballet company of the twentieth-century. The ballet was choreographed by Léonide Massine with music by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. It premiered on July 22, 1919, at the Alhambra Theatre in London with sets, costume designs, and the monumental stage curtain created by Picasso. Picasso biographer John Richardson once called "Le Tricorne" the artist's "supreme theatrical achievement." The production, which was conceived by Diaghilev and Massine during a trip to Spain, was enhanced by its many Spanish collaborators, including Picasso who also designed the costumes and set for the ballet. Measuring roughly 20 feet square, the curtain depict... (read more)
