Shortly after Justin Bieber announced his decision to cancel the final leg of his 'Purpose World Tour' in July, some people pointed fingers towards Justin's newfound devotion to the Christian faith as playing a role in the decision.
The Hillsong Church – where Justin practises his religion – denied the speculation at the time, and now Justin's confidant at the church, Pastor Carl Lentz, has denied it again, appearing on The Breakfast Club today (October 27) to argue: "Why would I want Beliebers mad at me?"
Yeah. That's fair.
"People who speculate like that don't have any context of what it means to have a pastor or a friend and Justin made his own calls," Lentz said (via Billboard).
"He made his own decisions. It's not my role to tell this boy, this man really, man of God, what to do. He's gonna do what he's gonna do and I'm going to sit there and say, 'I'm with you.' If he asks for advice, I would give it. But that's not my primary role.
"Why would I have a hand in cancelling his tour? Why would I want Beliebers mad at me?"
Bieber announced in July that he wouldn't be playing the remainder of the dates for his two-year-long mega tour with just 14 shows to go, mostly taking place in the US and Canada, but also in Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Singapore.
The tour was cancelled due to "unforeseen circumstances", but Bieber later apologised to his fans and anybody who felt "disappointed or betrayed" by the decision.
Bieber's manager Scooter Braun also issued an apology after the announcement and thanked fans for the support they'd shown over the tour.
"On behalf of myself, Justin, and the team, we are sorry," he said. "But a man's soul and well being I truly care about came first and We must all respect and honour that."
