Denim Day Celebrates 20 Years of Advocacy for Sexual Violence Survivors - Spectrum News 1

LOS ANGELES -- Internationally recognized campaign, Denim Day, turns 20 years old this year. The movement started two decades ago with the intention of raising awareness about sexual violence.

Patti Giggans, the founder of Denim Day, reflected on the success of the campaign at a recent sexual violence prevention event put on by Peace Over Violence at Union Station.

"There's been this consistent Denim Day, sexual violence prevention campaign for 20 years. We've been educating, challenging, and encouraging people to wake up. Learn the reality and the truth about sexual violence in all its forms. Please understand that no one deserves to be harassed, abused, assaulted, and raped, no one deserves that, no one," Giggans said.

As the daughter of a survivor, Giggans is passionate about empowering others to speak up, that's why she responded with such fervor to an Italian case in the 90's which initially justified a woman's rape due to the tightness of her jeans, asserting that the accuser must have helped the accused with the sexual act since the jeans would have been too difficult for him to remove on his own.

The women of the Italian Parliament protested the next day, with everyone wearing jeans. Giggans stood in solidarity with the statement, and started a trend that now reaches millions.

"I think the reason that it caught on is that something like that is very common. We wear jeans all the time, we love our denim jackets, everybody, all ages correct? It's like this idea of doing something very pedestrian, very ordinary, but combining it with something very serious and very significant as sexual violence. It just seemed to click with people," she explained.

Officially, the campaign currently reaches over 12 million people, according to Peace Over Violence.

From Los Angeles to New York, and Mexico to Japan, wearing denim is a symbolic declaration that there is no excuse for  sexual violence.

"I was raised by a survivor and I could see the challenges that she had because of that as I was learning more about it as an adult. She was very strong and she wasn't just going to remain a victim. She went on a healing path for herself and that inspired me," said Giggans.

She now hopes to extend that healing path for others.

"I think that every year that we do this, more people get engaged, more people get involved, and more people are changing their minds and questioning their older beliefs, their older misconceptions that they've had. So each year, I just get more re-inspired and I think it's fantastic that at least we have a path to make change" said Giggans.

Levi's Joins Cotton Inc.'s Blue Jeans Go Green to Recycle Denim - Sourcing Journal

Posted: 26 Apr 2019 09:02 AM PDT

Levi Strauss & Co. announced a new denim recycling initiative with Cotton Incorporated's Blue Jeans Go Green program.

The Blue Jeans Go Green initiative, which launched in 2006, lets consumers bring denim clothing—from any brand and in any condition—to dedicated recycling bins at partner retailers. Levi's will the program at its mainline and outlet stores in the United States and Canada. In exchange, consumers will receive a 20 percent discount off an in-store purchase. Levi's joins other stores like Madewell and Rag + Bone for the project, which will expand as Levi's continues to open store locations.

"For more than 150 years, we have made products that are built to last," said Michael Kobori, vice president of sustainability at Levi Strauss & Co., in a statement. "Extending the life of denim through recycling or repurposing is crucial to building a more sustainable business and driving toward a more circular economy."

The initiative, Kobori said, is a key feature for the strategy Levi's has to hit its sustainability benchmarks. The company hopes to hit major goals around climate impact, chemical applications, and water usage, and alter its sourcing, design and manufacturing processes to plan for future circularity.

Levi's also offers consumers several opportunities to extend the life of their denim, in whatever way they can. The brand's Authorized Vintage line refashions archive-quality denim for resale in select stores, and at in-store tailor shops Levi's professionals can repair used garments that might otherwise be wasted. Now, items that are beyond repair will be able to be converted into yet another product, rather than going into landfills like many post-consumer apparel pieces.

According to Cotton Incorporated, any type of denim, including scraps or non-jean items like jackets, is eligible for recycling. Blends are, too—though the fabric does need to contain at least 90 percent cotton.

To date, the Blue Jeans Go Green program has recycled more than 2.5 million pieces of denim, to create almost 5 million square feet of insulation, according to a statement from Cotton Incorporated. The denim insulation developed through the program isn't for sale, but given to charity partners for use in schools and libraries, as well as in housing built by Habitat for Humanity affiliates. Bonded Logic, UltraTouch™ Denim Insulation's manufacturer, said the insulation contains 80 percent post-consumer recycled natural fibers. It's just as effective as traditional insulation, since it utilizes cotton's natural sound-absorbing and thermal-preservation qualities.

Kobori hopes that consumers respond in force to the announcement, and mobilize to take advantage of the recycling opportunity.

"We hope [consumers] tell their friends to help spread awareness of the disastrous consequences of textile waste and the growing number of options denim owners have to make sure their used garments don't go the same direction," Kobori said. "And we hope this is just one small part of a much broader conversation between brands and consumers that will help us all work more sustainability and drive towards a far more circular approach to both product development and commercial consumption."

Wiz Khalifa is giving up his signature skinny jeans - Page Six

Posted: 25 Apr 2019 11:56 AM PDT

Taylor Gang has a new dress code.

Rapper Wiz Khalifa has always stayed true to his uniform of skinny jeans and a short-sleeved shirt, but it seems like that's changing.

"No more skinny jeans. Y'all can still wear em. I just don't own any," Khalifa, 31, tweeted on Wednesday.

Some of his fans pointed out that the style switch is likely due to the 35 pounds the "Young, Wild & Free" artist gained learning jiu-jitsu. "I was cool with being skinny before. But as a 30-year-old man, I like myself with more weight," he said in 2018.

Khalifa has rapped about his weight on previous albums, and reportedly now weighs 175 pounds — up from 140 — because of the work he put in at the gym with jiu-jitsu master Rigan Machado.

Other fans who remember Wiz's style evolution pointed out that the rapper used to wear baggy jeans before he favored body-hugging pants, and that the style change-up could signify a more significant shift in his music.

Kanye West once remarked that Khalifa has "cool pants;" hopefully, his new aesthetic will get a similar stamp of approval.
