Greyson Chance's "Afterlife" - Single Review

Little Monsters around the world know Greyson Chance from an impressive piano cover of Lady Gaga's hit song "Paparazzi" back in 2010. The then 13-year-old became an Internet sensation, caught the attention of Ellen DeGeneres and quickly released his debut album, Hold On 'til the Night, which garnered mixed reviews from fans and critics alike. Following the release of his Truth Be Told, Part 1 extended play and a couple of one-off singles ("Thrilla In Manila", "Meridians"), the artist is ready for the next big step in his career.

Chance's new single "Afterlife" (officially out tomorrow) is the first taste of his second EP, Somewhere Over My Head, set for release in early 2016. For those who have not heard the artist's vocal abilities since his Lady Gaga cover or "Waiting Outside the Lines" days, they will be pleasantly surprised. The 18-year-old sounds mature, confident and more in tune with his still-developing voice. Fives years does wonders for an aspiring artist, don't they?

Constructed as an upbeat, mid-tempo ballad, Chance details a personal story of a romantic interest taking a leap into the unknown. Besides a commendable vocal performance, the new single makes an impact due to the emotionally-driven songwriting and a soaring hook that would not sound out of place on radio. "But you wanted to go higher, take a chance and explode, thought I was more than the afterlife," he effortlessly belts.

"Afterlife" recalls the indie-pop work of Mat Kearney, an honest compliment. Instead of overusing tired, production-heavy trends, found all too often in today's pop world, Chance lets his natural talents carry the track. The artist is able to showcase a solid vocal range and create a connection with listeners by giving them a quick peek into his personal life. This allows the single to become a true moment for the artist, reintroducing himself as more than just a Gaga-loving child.

It's clear, Chance is a young man now, who has matured quite nicely into his vocals and suave style. "Afterlife" is the type of heartfelt, passionate and infectious release he needed to show everyone how serious he is about taking his career to the next level. As a first taste of his upcoming projects, the track is a promising indicator of a possible future pop takeover. Evidence of artistic growth has never been so easy to pinpoint, Chance is a soulful presence slowly rising.
