The Kardashian / Jenner Family Hurts 2015 Magazine Newsstand Sales

A few months ago Cosmopolitan Magazine rightfully came under fire for labeling the Kardashian / Jenner family “America’s First Family.” At the time we chalked up the misstep as an attempt to sell issues. Even when confronted, Cosmo editor-in-chief Joanna Coles retorted “People accused me o putting the on the cover to ‘sell a few magazines.’ Are you out o your mind? It sold f–k— millions!” But according to a report from WWD, that’s not the case.

That 50th anniversary issue sold 436,500 in total copy sales, well under even one million. In fact, the cover was under the magazine’s average of about 500,000 single issue copies and undersold even Kylie Jenner’s February cover which came in at 495,423. In case you were wondering, these aren’t good numbers.

Magazine sales aren’t doing well anywhere but this year publications have noticed a slump in sales whenever they tap one of the Kardashian brood for a cover. The group Cosmo cover was one of the publication’s worst sellers of the year and Vanity Fair’s Caitlyn Jenner cover only sold 432,923 copies. Kendall’s appearances on Allure and GQ were slightly below those publication’s average sales (81,385 or Allure and 83,202 for GQ). And for Kim’s appearance on Glamour? The publication dipped down from it’s 193,108 copy average to 164,918.

But some magazines got it right. When Kylie hit Teen Vogue, she boosted that publication’s sales by 1,000. Other boosts included Kim on Rolling Stone and Khloe on Women’s Health. We wonder if this will mean less Kardashians in 2016.
